tagged as: gigs , jq , music no comments 12 may/10 off my thoughts on the coalition this blog post is intended for the 6,827,938 people who voted liberal democrat on 6th may. i know some are angry and upset over the coalition deal and for those i will try and explain why you should give us - and the coalition - time to prove it can work. i can't deny i am a mixed bag of emotions right now. when i joined the party in 2000 it was with the hope of seeing liberal democrat values and policies put into practice. and ten years later, that's exactly what we've got. the knowledge of that, with the sight of liberal democrat politicians that i know and trust taking seats at the cabinet table, is a source of massive pride for me. but, like many of you, i instinctively don't like and don't trust the conservatives at a national level. but if clegg, cable and the negotiating team are willing to, then i will place my trust in them. for the time being. let us remember, the situation we were given was not of our making. we were given this situation by the electorate. whilst the idea of a "rainbow coalition" was appealing, we all know the maths simply couldn't work . even if we could have cobbled together a partnership, it would have been brought down in an instant by just a few rebels. the markets would have reacted, and the country would have suffered. when you also bear in mind labour were not seriously interested in anything other than going into opposition, we had just two realistic options. to let the tories govern on their own or to try and put liberal democrat influence into government. the liberal democrat election campaign was centred around delivering real change around four clear priorities: fairer taxes, a fairer education system, prioritising the economy and building a sustainable future, and changing our political and electoral system. nick clegg was entirely open and honest every step of the way that any potential deal would have to prioritise those four policy areas. that's exactly what we've got out of this coalition deal. in fact it goes further than i had expected. we have the promise of a directly elected house of lords using proportional representation, with a referendum on av for the commons. far from perfect, but an immense step forward and far more than i would have expected from the conservatives. we have our £10k income tax plans adopted in part. we have our "pupil premium" policy adopted. and it looks as if we have vince cable in position to sort out our failed banking system. the alternative would have been a minority tory government that did not deliver any of those things . i for one appreciate that. i suspect that in time the majority of liberal democrat voters, and indeed the british public, will also. for those lib dem members and supporters frustrated that every piece of our policy hasn't been included, or quibbling about detail, i say this - get real . when you consider the number of votes and seats we got compared to the conservatives, nick clegg and the negotiating team have done an amazing job to get so much of our policy into this deal. some long-standing policy hasn't made it and for that i am genuinely sad, but also realistic about the situation we find ourselves in. we are now a party in government and tough choices will have to be made every single day. today i have made the tough choice to back this deal that gives liberal democrats what we have always wanted - the chance to significantly influence government policy - whilst at the same time limiting the extremes that a tory government would have delivered. we fight for proportional representation, which would produce this kind of government time after time. this is our one chance to prove coalition government can work. we must not be frightened, we must not bicker. we must take this incredible opportunity to show the country what liberal democrat policy can do. let's do this! tagged as: conservatives , elections , government 6 comments 12 may/10 off problems at jewellery quarter polling station the massive downside of polling day for me was witnessing the total farce that was the st paul's church polling station in the jewellery quarter. i was contacted by a friend at 9.10pm to say there were hundreds of people in the queue and he was worried about not getting to vote. i arrived a few minutes later and was stunned by the length of the queue, at the time it must have numbered 200 people, both inside and outside the church. i spoke to the polling station staff and several people in the queue and made several phone calls to see if anything could be done about the situation. i stayed until approximately 9.45pm before heading to the nia for the count. according to several reports the polling station remained open until 10.07pm allowing some people to vote, but estimates of 100 people were turned away. this must never be allowed to happen again. there was clearly a failure in planning which allowed one polling station to cover over 3,000 residents on a general election day. i must be clear, i am not claiming the result should be called into question. but approximately 100 people have had their right to vote removed because of poor planning. this is simply unacceptable, particularly in this day and age when so many people had been turned off politics. i have written to the elections office, the electoral commission and the police to highlight the problems and to request that a second polling station be used for the jewellery quarter in future years. the location for that could be st paul's church itself, or a city centre location for those residents on that side of the area. one suggestion from the conservatives is the museum of the jewellery quarter, which i would also support. i have also requested a full investigation be conducted into why the polling station remained open until the arbitrary time of 10.07pm. if you were affected by the problems, the electoral commission wants to hear from you. filed under: blog , tnt news no comments 12 may/10 off ladywood ward result i'd like to say a huge thank you to the 2,338 people who voted for me in the council elections last week. the final result was: nikel (lib dem) - 2,338 penant (con) - 1,684 rice (lab) - 3,504 robertson (grn) - 378 my congratulations to carl rice on being re-elected and my congratulations to the other defeated candidates on running generally positive campaigns. the campaign from labour was certainly more positive than in other parts of the city, such as the gutter politics from roger godsiff in birmingham hall green. we achieved nearly 30% of the vote, an incredible increase from the 13% achieved at the last local elections in 2008. this just goes to show that despite labour's constant bleating, residents are simply not outraged by the liberal democrat / conservative coalition we have running the city. the number of emails, phone calls and letters of support i received during the campaign was simply overwhelming. thank you for all of those - and thank you to everyone who helped during the campaign. the numbers volunteering throughout the campaign was really encouraging for all of us involved. we will continue to work for and campaign on behalf of the residents of ladywood over the next year. i'll also make a real effort to keep this blog going, too! filed under: blog , tnt news 1 comment 4 feb/10 off new street revamp given the green light birmingham city council's planning committee have given the final approval to plans to redevelop birmingham new street station. the bold design will transform the welcome vi
